Iceland Express Barred from Reykjavík Airport

The urban planning division for Reykjavík City has rejected Iceland Express’ request for facilities at Reykjavík Domestic Airport, where Air Iceland is facilitated. They argue that since the future location for the airport is undecided, constructing there is unwise.

Aviation service Flugstodir (ISAVIA) applied for a temporary solution for Iceland Express at Reykjavík Domestic Airport on behalf of the airline.

“We will discuss this further with Flugstodir this week,” CEO of Iceland Express Matthías Imsland told Fréttabladid. The airline’s plan is to offer scheduled flights between Reykjavík and Akureyri in competition with Air Iceland.

Councilman for the Independence Party Gísli Marteinn Baldursson said it may take two and a half years before the feasibility of other possible locations for Reykjavík Domestic Airport, which is currently located in the city center, have been investigated.

“People are against granting such requests shortly before a decision [about the airport’s future location] is made,” Marteinsson said, adding that if there is another temporary solution for Iceland Express, Reykjavík City will look into it.

Baldursson added Air Iceland had also applied for new facilities at the airport. “They want to construct new buildings, but I say we have to look at this in context. We can hardly construct three or four new terminals around an airport which future is insecure.”
