Iceland exports sand to the US

Icelanders have started exporting sand reports the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. Ómar Antonsson, a landowner in Horn, Hornafjördur, has sold 5,000 tons of perlumöl (“pearl-gravel”) from the beach on his property. The first shipment, 1,000 tons, will be shipped to the U.S. in January.

According to Ómar the sand will be used in swimming pools, the customers are interested in the black color of the sand and its hardness. By the year 2007, 10,000 tons of sand will be exported per year.
