Iceland Expects 1.73 Million Tourists

According to updated projections by Isavia, the company which runs Keflavík International Airport, 6.7 million passengers will go through the airport this year, RÚV reports. Of those, 1.73 million are expected to visit the country. This is quite an increase from previous projections from November when the number of foreign tourists visiting the country was expected to reach 1.5 million. The new figures are based on final flight schedules from the airlines, which became available a month ago. The main increase, according to Isavia, is expected September through December.

Last year, about 4.8 million passengers went through the airport, close to 1.3 million of whom were foreign tourists who visited the country.

In order to be able to receive those record numbers, the airport plans an ISK 20 billion (USD 154 million, EUR 141 million) construction project this year.
