Pat Gallagher, an Irish member of the European Parliament and its representative in the membership talks with Iceland, said at parliament yesterday that negotiations on Iceland’s membership to the European Union will not begin until spring 2010.

The Icelandic government had hoped that membership talks could begin as early as next month, but that doesn’t seem realistic to the European Parliament, visir.is reports.
RÚV reported that the EU’s enlargement was up for discussion at the European Parliament yesterday, including matters concerning Iceland.
Gallagher said he is hopeful that the membership negotiations with Iceland will be focused and, above all, on friendly terms.
