Iceland Eruption Trips Popular

Hiking tours to the Holuhraun eruption site this upcoming summer are sold out at two tour operators, Ferðafélag Íslands (the Iceland Touring Association) and Útivist, which have mainly catered to Icelandic tourists. Other companies are also organizing trips to the eruption site ahead of the peak tourism season.

About half of all 60 tours on offer by Ferðafélag Íslands across all parts of Iceland this summer are sold out, according to the association’s director Páll Guðmundsson, reports.

Both associations run hiking trips around the country, year-round.

The restricted area around the Holuhraun eruption site was significantly reduced in mid-March following the end of the eruption at the end of February. The restricted area now extends 20 m (66 feet) outside the edges of the new lava field, to the edge of Dyngjujökull outlet glacier on the south side, the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum to the east and to the westernmost branches of Jökulsá á Fjöllum in the west.
