Iceland Defeated by Latvia

Despite two goals from Barcelona’s Eidur Gudjohnsen, Iceland lost badly to Latvia in a European Championship qualifying match in Reykjavík on Saturday.

Maris Verpakovskis scored two goals for Latvia and Oskars Klava and Juris Laizans one each in the 2-4 match at Laugardalur Stadium. Three of Latvia’s goal came during a ten minute long episode in first half.

Gudjohnsen set a new record when he scored his goals. He has scored 19 goals in international matches, two more than the 1950s legend Ríkhardur Jónsson. However, in an interview with Morgunbladid daily, Gudjohnsen stated that he would rather have won the match than break Jónsson’s record.

After the match a fight broke out between some supporters of the Latvian and Icelandic teams. The police managed to contain the brawl before anyone was injured.
