Iceland Crushes Greece in Women’s Football

The Icelandic national women’s football team beat Greece 7-0 in the pre-round for the European Championship in Iceland’s home stadium in Reykjavík yesterday. The team’s youngest player, Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir, scored the first goal.

“It was a fantastic feeling to score that goal. Now there were much more people and a better atmosphere than on Saturday, so it was just amazing,” Gunnarsdóttir, who played her first national game in Iceland’s home stadium with a 5-0 victory over Slovenia on Saturday, told mbl.is.

“We were going to play with full force right from the start and we did, we never gave in and fought forcefully through the game. We all played as well as we could,” Gunnarsdóttir said.

“It is a very good feeling to have such a good opportunity to play in the finals, very exciting, and now we are only focusing on the game with France,” Gunnarsdóttir concluded.

Iceland will play against France next fall and a draw will be enough to secure the team a place in the European Championship.
