Nearly ISK 92 million (USD 1.3 million, EUR 857,000) were collected during the so-called Butterfly Week in Iceland last week, aimed at raising support for UNIFEM, which fights violence against women in war-torn countries.
According to UNIFEM Iceland, this is among the highest amounts ever collected in a charity initiative in this country with only a few more than 300,000 inhabitants, Morgunbladid reports.
Deputy Executive Director for UNIFEM in New York Joanna Sandler said the Butterfly Week marks in many ways a turning point in the organization’s history and that other divisions of UNIFEM around the world should do the same.
