Iceland’s Coast Guard has responded to around 40% more helicopter callouts so far this July than during the same period last year, with crews handling up to four missions a day amid a busy summer season.
While overall callout numbers for 2026 remain broadly in line with last year, July has seen a marked increase in demand, driven by a mix of medical evacuations, accidents and land searches.

- Coast Guard helicopter callouts have risen from about 25 to 35 so far this July.
- Crews have responded to as many as four incidents in a single day.
- Officials attribute the increase to higher activity rather than any single cause.
Busy Summer Period
Auðunn Kristinsson, operations manager at the Icelandic Coast Guard, said the organisation had attended roughly 35 helicopter callouts so far this month, compared with around 25 by the same point in July 2025.
He said there was no single explanation for the increase, describing it instead as an unusually busy period involving air ambulance missions, accidents and searches on land.
Auðunn suggested the higher number of incidents was likely linked to more people travelling around the country during the summer months.
Despite the increased workload, he said the Coast Guard has been able to maintain normal operations.
The service has two helicopters and two crews available for emergency response, allowing it to cope with the recent rise in demand, although he acknowledged the pace has at times placed additional pressure on personnel.
