Iceland Beats Turkey in Euro 2016 Qualifiers

The Icelandic national team in men’s football beat Turkey 3-0 at Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík last night, in their first game for a seat at the 2016 European Championship in France. Jón Daði Björgvinsson, Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson and Kolbeinn Sigþórsson scored the goals.

“What can I say? It was a marvelous start. We aimed for victory and set our goals high. We performed well … but this is just the beginning,” captain Aron Einar Gunnarsson told “We must continue and prepare for the next game.”

“It was pretty good, I must say: 3-0 against Turkey is not something we’re used to. It was a great game for the entire team. They all played brilliantly,” added Kolbeinn.

The team was focused and confident from the very first minute throughout the entire game, which made it one of the best Iceland has ever played, Morgunblaðið sports journalist Víðir Sigurðsson wrote.

Turkey did their best to break through and there were times when they almost succeeded but after Ömer Topak got a red card after 60 minutes “their backs were against the wall,” Víðir added.

Any doubts that Iceland were up for the task of fighting for a seat at the European Championship must surely be out the window now, he concluded.
