The Icelandic national team in men’s basketball was off to a good start to the 2017 European Championship qualifiers last night, beating Switzerland 88:72 in at Laugardalshöll arena in Reykjavík. Iceland earned two points in qualifying group A.

Iceland proved the stronger team right from the start, achieving a 26-point lead at one point. However, Switzerland put up a fight but remained at least ten points behind the entire game, mbl.is reports.

The top scorers for Iceland were Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson with 16 points, Hlynur Bæringsson with 15 points and Martin Hermannsson.

Iceland plays Cyprus next in an away game on September 14.

In 2015, the Icelandic team won the hearts of basketball fans for playing bravely and passionately, despite losing all its games in the European Championship in Berlin. It was the first time Iceland qualified for a major tournament.
