Iceland’s coach Lars Lagerbäck was satisfied with Iceland’s victory but stated the team had been lucky as Slovenia was the stronger team in the first half, ruv.is reports.

Lagerbäck said that the efforts of Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson in the second half had revived the Icelandic offense and that Gylfi’s two goals had been worth their weight in gold.

He stated Iceland is now in a good position to reach second place in qualifying group E and hopes that the team will perform well in its second game against Slovenia in Reykjavík in June.

According to mbl.is, Gylfi was named best player of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Qualifiers round on Saturday on the website of FIFA.

In other sport news, the Icelandic national team in women’s handball beat Sweden for the second time in two days in a friendly in Reykjavík on Sunday, 30-27.

Before Iceland’s victory on Saturday—the end score was 25-24 for Iceland—the Icelandic national team hadn’t beaten Sweden in women’s handball in 49 years, ruv.is reports.
