Iceland Beats Slovenia 5-0

The women’s national football team beat Slovenia 5-0 on Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík on Saturday. Iceland was in the lead throughout the entire game and “goal queen” Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir scored a hat-trick.

With the victory over Slovenia, Iceland secured the right to play for a place in the European Championship next year. If Iceland beats Greece on Thursday, a deciding game for a place in the championship against France will follow next fall, Fréttabladid reports.

On Saturday, Iceland was clearly the stronger team straight from the beginning of the game.

“We were much better than I had expected,” said national team player Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir. “We scored early in the game and that was very important. We had to stay focused for 90 minutes and we did. The Slovenian team was rather weak but our performance was just the way we want it do be.”

Vidarsdóttir scored the first three goals of the game, two thereof in the first half. Captain Katrín Jónsdóttir scored the fourth goal and Katrín Ómarsdóttir the fifth and final goal in the last minutes.

Vidarsdóttir, who is 21, has now scored 40 goals in 42 national games.
