The Icelandic national team in women’s football beat Serbia 9-1 in the 2015 World Cup qualifiers at Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík yesterday. It was goalkeeper Þóra Björg Helgadóttir’s last game with the team; she has played 108 games in her 16-year career.
Despite ending up in the qualifying group’s second place, Iceland no longer has a chance of winning a seat in the World Cup in Canada. But they were in high spirits nonetheless as they bid their goalkeeper farewell, visir.is reports.
“I’ll definitely be content with my decision when I wake up tomorrow but also a little sad. But I couldn’t have asked for a better ending with all this support from the stand and a grand victory in a home game,” Þóra stated.
In other football news, the Icelandic national team in men’s football has jumped to 34th place from 47th in the FIFA World Ranking published this morning after beating Turkey 3-0 earlier this month.
It’s Iceland’s best achievement to date; the previous record was 37, ruv.is reports.
The Icelandic women’s team is at number 17, down one spot since the last ranking.
