Iceland Beats Portugal in Algarve Cup

The Icelandic national team in women’s football beat Portugal 3-0 in their final game in the Algarve Cup yesterday and placed ninth. The first half ended without goals but early in the second half Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir scored the first goal for Iceland.

The second goal was scored by Ólína Gudbjörg Vidarsdóttir in the 63rd minute and Dóra María Lárusdóttir sealed Iceland’s victory with the third goal in added time. Iceland was clearly the stronger party in the second half but the first half was rather uneventful, visir.is describes.

Meanwhile, the Icelandic national team in men’s football tied Cyprus 0-0 in a friendly game yesterday. The Icelandic team performed well towards the end with three shots to the bar, one of which appeared to be a goal but went unnoticed by the referees.

Iceland and Cyprus will play again in the preliminary round to the European Championship which begins next autumn.
