Iceland beats France

The Icelandic female football (soccer) team beat France 1-0 on Saturday, securing its best achievement ever. France is considered a much stronger team with a ranking of number 7 on the International Federation of Association Football’s (FIFA’s list) of the world’s best teams. Iceland is ranked 21st.

“To beat such a strong team is unbelievable. Almost everything worked out for us. I’m incredibly proud of the team,” trainer Ragnar Eyjólfsson told Fréttabladid.

Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir scored the only goal in the game with a header shortly before the end of the game. France attacked aggressively throughout the game, but Iceland defended well, as did the team’s goalkeeper, Thóra B. Helgadóttir.
