The Icelandic men’s national football team beat Finland 3-2 at Laugardalsvöllur arena tonight in a qualifying game for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, to be held in Russia. This was Iceland’s second game in the qualifiers.
Alfreð Finnbogason put the ball in the net 18 minutes into the game, but he was offside and the goal didn’t count, according to RÚV. Three minutes later, Teemu Pukki scored for Finland with a header. During the 36th minute, Kári Árnason tied by scoring for Iceland with a header, following a corner kick. Only two minutes later, Robin Lod scored for Finland, bringing the score to 1-2. That’s how the score was at half time.
Fifty minutes into the game, Iceland was awarded a penalty kick, which Gylfi Þór Finnbogason took, but the Finnish goalie, Hradecky, saved.
Finally, 90 minutes into the game, Iceland managed to tie with a header from Alfreð Finnbogason, assisted by Gylfi Sigurðsson.
Iceland’s winning goal came about five minutes into overtime, when Gylfi Sigurðsson scored.
Iceland now has four points in the qualifiers, as does Croatia. Croatia beat Kosovo tonight, 6-0, while the game between Turkey and Ukraine ended in a draw, 2-2.
Iceland’s next qualifying game is against Turkey at Laugardalsvöllur arena on Sunday.
