Iceland Beats Cyprus in Football, Keane to Take Over?

The Icelandic national team in men’s football beat Cyprus 1-0 at Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík in the qualifying round of the European Championship yesterday, thanks to the winning goal scored by Kolbeinn Sigthórsson in the fourth minute.

It was Iceland’s first victory in a competitive match in 1,056 days, Fréttabladid reports. On September 2, Iceland lost 0-1 against Norway at the Ullevaal stadium in Oslo in the European Championship qualifying round, reports.

The contract of Iceland’s manager Ólafur Jóhannesson expires next month and according to recent news, members of the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) are interested in hiring a foreign coach.

Former Manchester United captain, Sunderland and Ipswich manager Roy Keane has been mentioned as a likely candidate both in the Icelandic and British media.

Chairman of KSÍ Geir Thorsteinsson declined to comment on the speculation but confirmed to that a number of foreign coaches had expressed interest in the position.
