Iceland Beat Slovakia in Football

The Icelandic women’s football (soccer) team yesterday bested Slovakia in a convincing 2-0 victory away from home. In a tight schedule, the team go straight from this friendly match to a game against the Netherlands on Monday.

Elín Metta Jensen opened the scoring in the 19th minute after an electrifying attack from the Icelanders which saw the ball moved from their own penalty box all the way to the opposing end, where Hallbera Gísladóttir manhandled it into the path of Elín Metta, who scored from close range, Vísir reports.

Later on, with twelve minutes of normal time remaining on the clock, Berglind Björk Þorvaldsdóttir scored her first goal in 24 internationals when she headed the ball into the net off a corner from the left side.

The joy of scoring came as such a relief to Berglind after such a long wait, that she admitted later to shedding tears as the ball lay in the back of the goal.
