Iceland to “Blow Up” Outvasion Vikings

By Iceland Review

New types of fireworks are currently for sale, portraying well known businessmen (so-called outvasion Vikings), bankers and politicians, who many members of the public hold responsible for the economic collapse. On New Year’s Eve people will have the chance to “blow them up.”

Fireworks depicting “real Vikings,” characters from the Icelandic sagas, will also be available, as they have been for the past decade or so, mbl.is reports.

Hördur Hardarson at the Scout Search and Rescue Service (Hjálparsveit skáta), who are selling fireworks to support their work, recommended people invest less money in alcohol and more money in fireworks this year. So far, fireworks sales have been slow.

Setting off fireworks is enjoyable for the entire family, Hardarson said, reminding people that by buying fireworks they are supporting a good cause.

Selling fireworks is the most important source of income for search and rescue services in Iceland. Their members are all volunteers.

To encourage safety on New Year’s Eve, search and rescue service Landsbjörg (ICE-SAR) and the Association of the Blind donated gift certificates for protective glasses to all children aged ten to 15 in Iceland, visir.is reports.
