Iceland’s PM: Canadian and U.S. Dollar Good Options

Prime Minister of Iceland Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson has reaffirmed that Iceland could adopt another currency, the Canadian or U.S. dollar. The PM made the comment on news chat program Bítið on Bylgjan radio this morning in response to a question about investor Heiðar Már Guðjónsson’s proposal to take up either the U.S. or Canadian dollar. Heiðar was interviewed on Icelandic television over the weekend, eyjan.is reports.

“It could be a good alternative … and it is feasible … but there are risks of having a currency which we do not control ourselves,” Sigmundur said. “Whatever we do, the road we choose, keep the króna or something else, we have to start at the same place and make the economy stronger, lower the government’s debt and keep the inflation under control.”
