Iceland’s PM Auctions off Famous Mismatching Shoe

Iceland’s Prime Minister, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, auctioned off one of the mismatching shoes he wore to this meeting with Obama, yesterday.

The crew members of the fishing boat Guðmundur VE 29 from Vestmanneyjar bought the shoe (and it’s matching counterpart) for ISK 175,000 (USD 1,500, EUR 1,000) for the campaign Á allra vörum, collecting money for a special emergency department for the mentally ill at Landspítali National University Hospital, reports.

Photographs of Sigumundur wearing one black dress shoe and one black Nike sports shoe at a meeting in Sweden with Obama and the leaders of the Nordic countries were widely circulated.

The story garnered significant attention in Sweden and became the most-read story on the website of Sweden’s largest newspaper, Aftonbladet.

According to Sigmundur’s assistant, Jóhannes Þór Skúlason, one of Sigmundur’s feet was swollen due to an infection and so he was unable to wear his footwear of choice on both feet.

Last year, the crew of Guðmundur VE 29 purchased the shoes of Icelandic football star Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson which were auctioned off to raise funds for children with cancer.
