Iceland’s Minister of Finance: EU Referendum Not on the Horizon

This morning, at a televised meeting with the theme of Iceland’s economy and the Government’s rescue plan, Iceland’s Minister of Finance Bjarni Benediktsson declared that the Icelandic króna is the only viable currency for Iceland at the moment. Vísir.is reports this today.

“If we cannot even manage our own currency, how are we supposed to manage another one instead?” the Minister explained.

The meeting, which was held at Harpa, was hosted by Íslandsbanki’s Wealth Management division.

At the meeting, Bjarni furthermore expressed doubts that a national referendum regarding Iceland’s possible entry into the European Union would take place during his time in office, which notably started only six months ago.

Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson was scheduled to attend the meeting but he canceled.
