Iceland’s Liberal Party suspends its manager

Manager of the Liberal Party Margrét Sverrisdóttir was given leave last night, after, she says, objecting to “the racist ideas” of fellow party member Jón Magnússon.

In an interview with Morgunbladid, Sverrisdóttir said losing her job came as a surprise. She was given three months notice and is to resign on 1 March 2007. She has worked for the party for almost ten years.

Sverrisdóttir said Magnússon had wanted to change the party’s policy on immigrant issues, but she had wanted to stick to the party’s former policy and discuss immigration in terms of its effect on the labor market.

In the interview with Morgunbladid, Sverrisdóttir did not reveal the exact nature of Magnússon’s “racist ideas,” what the change in the party’s policy on immigrant issues would include or what she had said.

Sverrisdóttir is intending to run for the first seat of the Liberal Party in the south Reykjavík primary and run for MP in the general elections in May. She said her suspension as manager would not affect her plans.
