Iceland’s Leaders Raise Stellar Amount for Cancer Research

By posing for a photograph as Star Trek’s Dr. Spock and Captain Kirk, Iceland’s PM Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson and Minister of Finance Bjarni Benediktsson helped raise ISK 900,000 (USD 7,400, EUR 5,400) to support research for cancer in women.

The project was a part of the annual Pink October campaign, organized by the Icelandic Cancer Society.

Yesterday, the photograph, by Ari Magg, was put up for auction. It received nine bids, the highest being ISK 900,000.

The lucky winner wishes to remain anonymous.

Today’s auction features a custom-made pink jersey, which the national soccer team’s goalkeeper Hannes Þór Sigurðsson will wear in tonight’s game against Cyprus.

This is a historic game as it could help guarantee Iceland a ticket to the 2014 Brazil World Cup, which would be Iceland’s first time at the World Cup.
