Iceland’s Kenya plays first solo concert

Icelandic R&B singer Kenya Kristín Emilíudóttir performs her first solo concert tonight at Gaukur á Stöng nightclub in Reykjavík. Her song “Hot Dancin,” which has gained considerable popularity, will be out as a single this fall.

The singer is inspired by the masters of old Motown and soul, particularly Earth, Wind and Fire. Kenya writes all her lyrics herself and every song she will perform tonight is an original composition.

Kenya is currently working on her first studio album which will be released next summer. Some of Iceland’s most respected musicians, including bassist Jóhann Ásmundsson and keyboardist Eythór Gunnarsson from Mezzoforte, are participating in the project.

The album is produced by Jason Harden and Pismo from the US and is mixed by James “Bonzai” Caruso and Valgeir Sigurdsson, whose earlier work includes projects for artists like Björk.

Kenya first performed publicly in 2003 in a Motown show at the club Broadway in Reykjavík. Since then she has been a member of the band Kenya Nemor, which participated in the Iceland Airwaves festival last year.
