Iceland’s International Airport Closed Due to Blizzard

Two airplanes arriving from North America had to land at Reykjavík domestic airport on Friday because of a blizzard from the southwest and snowdrift at Keflavík International Airport, which made the breaking condition on the runways too risky.

Other traffic was also disturbed by the weather. Reykjanesbraut highway, which connects Reykjavík and Sudurnes region, including Keflavík Airport, was declared impassible due to poor visibility, as well as Hellisheidi mountain pass, connecting Reykjavík and Selfoss, Morgunbladid reports.

The Icelandic Road Administration made an effort to keep other roads in southwestern Iceland open. Many drivers were in trouble and search and rescue services were busy assisting stranded commuters.

Keflavík International Airport and all roads in southwestern Iceland reopened later in the weekend.
