Iceland’s Grass Root Movements to Run in Elections

By Iceland Review

Representatives of several grass root movements met to discuss improvements to democracy in Iceland yesterday, coming to the conclusion to cooperate on candidacy in the upcoming general elections in spring.

Their purpose is to activate changes and improvements in Icelandic society following the collapse of the country’s economy last fall, Morgunbladid reports.

Several groups have discussed matters concerning democracy, launched websites and organized meetings. Now these groups plan to join their forces and form a policy for their candidacy.

In addition to the “restoration of democracy in Iceland” their agenda will include emergency measures to prevent households and companies from going bankrupt.

Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde announced on Friday that he supported spring elections.
