Iceland’s Government Wins 60 Percent Approval Rating

More than 60 percent of respondents in a new opinion poll, undertaken by Capacent Gallup, support the new Social Democrat-Left-Green coalition. If the parties continue to enjoy so much support, they won’t require backing from the Progressive Party.

According to another poll undertaken by market research company MMR, Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir of the Social Democrats is the Icelandic politician who enjoys the most trust; 60 percent of respondents say they had faith in her.

The Social Democrats have now become Iceland’s largest political party with 27.7 percent of respondents to the Gallup poll saying they intend to vote for them, Fréttabladid reports.

Their former coalition partner, the Independence Party, follows closely with the support of 25.8 percent of respondents. The Left-Greens rank third with roughly 24 percent of respondents declaring their support for the party.

The Progressive Party, which is currently defending the Social Democrat-Left Green minority government from a vote of no confidence, are supported by approximately 15 percent of respondents, while the Liberal Party only have the support of 2.5 percent.

The poll was undertaken January 30 to February 15. The next parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 25.
