Iceland’s Foreign Minister visits Middle East

Foreign Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir arrived in Israel yesterday. She has scheduled meetings with both Israeli and Palestinian officials and has planned a trip to Jordan to investigate the situation of Iraqi refugees in the country.

Yesterday Gísladóttir visited the Golan Heights in North Israel. Today she plans to have lunch with the Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and in the afternoon to meet the Israeli Minister of Defense Ehud Barak in Tel Aviv, Morgunbladid reports.

Tomorrow a meeting between Iceland’s Foreign Minister and Israel’s President Shimon Peres is scheduled; on Thursday Gísladóttir will meet with the Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.

Thursday evening Gísladóttir will dine with Icelandic charity workers in the region and the day after visit a Palestinian refugee camp near Bethlehem. Her trip ends on Saturday with a visit to the Iraqi refugee camp in Jordan.
