Iceland’s Foreign Minister Meets with German Counterpart

Foreign Minister of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, who is participating in the state visit of President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson to Germany, met with his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle in Berlin yesterday.

They discussed Arctic and security issues as well as the European Union and free trade. Gunnar told Westerwelle that although Iceland’s new government had decided to put EU membership talks on hold, the country would like to strengthen cooperation with the EU.

Westerwelle expressed his understanding and willingness to continue good relations with Iceland.

President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany yesterday and the German President on Tuesday, Morgunblaðið reports.
