Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson leaves for Kiev today to meet with leaders of the country. Gunnar will meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Andri Deshchytsia over the weekend.
Deshchytsia previously held the post of Ambassador to Iceland and the other Nordic countries, based in Helsinki. During that time, he made several visits to Iceland.
Gunnar said in parliament yesterday that it was important to show solidarity with Ukraine and support for sanctions against Russia, ruv.is reports.
The United States and the EU have imposed sanctions on Russian and Ukrainian individuals following the disputed referendum in Crimea. EU leaders have signed an agreement on closer relations with Ukraine, in a show of support following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, bbc.com reports.
Two credit rating agencies have downgraded Russia’s outlook to negative from stable.
