Iceland’s Football Captain Undergoes Surgery Today

Captain of the Iceland Men’s National Football Team Aron Einar Gunnarsson will undergo surgery today for an injury sustained playing for Cardiff City F.C. on Saturday, RÚV reports. The midfielder took an awkward fall in the game against Hull which resulted in a sprained ankle and a tear in his knee.

Aron is a key member of the Iceland Men’s National Football Team which will compete in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia this June. Attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurðsson, another key player on the team, also sustained an injury earlier this year and is just starting to run again.

Aron is optimistic about recovering in time for the World Cup. “I’m in good hands here in Wales,” he said. “Top physicians and physiotherapists are treating me and I’m told if everything goes as hoped for then I have a good chance of recovering before our first game in Moscow. Time will make this clear but I am choosing to be positive and optimistic.”
