Iceland’s First Great-Great-Great-Grandfather?

Gissur Ó. Erlingsson became a great-great-great-grandfather on Thursday. It is very rare that six generations of the same family are alive at the same time and this might be the first time it happens in Iceland. Erlingsson visited the new family member on Saturday.

Erlingsson held the baby boy when Morgunbladid’s journalist and photographer came knocking to report on the historic moment.

“You bet I like him. It is impossible not to. It’s a handsome boy and he appears to be really strong,” Erlingsson commented.

“I never expected to become a great-great-great-grandfather,” Erlingsson added. He was born on March 21, 1909 and so he will turn 101 in three weeks.

The baby boy’s proud parents are Fjölnir Ólafsson and Vala Bjarney Gunnarsdóttir. The boy’s grandfather, and Fjölnir’s father, is baritone singer Ólafur Kjartan, son of Sigurdur Rúnar Jónsson, a.k.a. Diddi fiddle, who has now become a great-grandfather.

His mother is the newborn’s great-great-grandmother Jóhanna Gissurardóttir, the daughter of the great-great-great-grandfather Gissur Ó. Erlingsson.
