Iceland’s Capital World’s Best City for Swimming

Reykjavík is the best city in the world for swimming, according to Business Traveler magazine. Five cities made it to the top of the list in addition to Iceland’s capital, Budapest, Sydney, Barcelona and Las Vegas.

Reykjavík topped the list not only for the abundance of swimming pools within the capital region’s border but also for having the Blue Lagoon in the vicinity, mbl.is reports.

The magazine especially recommends taking a swim in the middle of winter in pitch-black darkness. Lucky swimmers will witness the northern lights light up the sky.

Iceland has often been recommended as a destination in the foreign media lately—Lonely Planet recently placed Iceland at the top of its list of the most economical destinations in 2010.

The Reykjavík Tourist Information Center has noticed an increase in travelers. February 14 to 20, 3,600 tourists dropped by the center on Adalstraeti in central Reykjavík, which is a 30 percent increase compared to an average February.
