Iceland’s Best Ram Gropers Awarded with Semen

The annual Icelandic Championship in Ram Judging, which commonly goes by ram groping, will take place at the Sheep Farming Museum in Hólmavík, the West Fjords, on Saturday. The three top contestants will receive ram semen as a prize.

“The ram judging takes place with Jón Vidar Jónmundsson, consultant and the best qualified sheep expert in Iceland, chairing the jury which evaluates four well-built rams with modern tools and equipment and then arranging them based on their qualities,” a statement from the museum reads on

“Then contestants will evaluate the rams using only their hands and common sense and try to come to the same conclusion as the jury. The laymen get to arrange the rams from place one to four and then put forth arguments for their choice but the experts rank the rams according to a points system all farmers are familiar with,” the statement concludes.

Among the prizes the ram gropers can win are a few portions of ram semen from the West Iceland Sheep Insemination Center which farmers can use to inseminate their ewes.

This is the ninth time that the ram groping championship will be held in Hólmavík. In the evening, a “gropers’ ball” will be held at the local community center.
