Iceland’s Ambassador to Denmark Leads Icesave Talks

Iceland’s Ambassador to Denmark Svavar Gestsson has been appointed to chair a new negotiating committee to find a solution to the dispute between Icelandic, British and Dutch authorities on Iceland’s compensation to Landsbanki’s Icesave depositors.

“It is, truth be told, an immensely large project. I’ll just tackle it according to my best knowledge and skills,” Gestsson told Morgunbladid.

The committee first assembled on Tuesday and the following days will be used for gathering information and distributing tasks. It has not been decided when the committee will meet with negotiating committees from the UK and the Netherlands.

The other members of the Icelandic committee are Páll Thórhallsson, Indridi H. Thorláksson, Áslaug Árnadóttir, Martin Eyjólfsson and Sturla Pálsson.

Iceland’s government also decided on Tuesday to appoint Jón Sigurdsson, the former chairman of the board of the Financial Supervisory Authority (FME), as chair of a negotiating committee handling discussion on loans from foreign states.
