Employees of the City of Reykjavík are currently clearing snow from part of the frozen Tjörnin, the pond by the City Hall, and turning it into a public ice rink with access from the street Tjarnargata.
This is carried out at the wish of the public that Tjörnin be used as an ice rink when the conditions are right, city authorities explain in a press release.
The forecast is for sub-zero temperatures in the capital throughout the weekend.
In the past, Tjörnin has often been used for skating by the capital’s inhabitants. Students of nearby colleges also like playing football on the frozen pond, as can be seen in the cover picture of yesterday’s Fréttablaðið.
