A man in his seventies has confessed to having planted the bomb that went off on Hverfisgata, a busy street close to the Government Offices in central Reykjavík on early January 31st. visir.is reports.

He is presumed to have acted alone and has now been released.
The police issued a statement saying that the man’s intent was not to cause harm but to convey a certain message to the government.
The nature of this message has not been disclosed.
The bomb is not considered to have been able to cause destruction as the man was standing next to the bomb as it went off.
Last Friday, the man was arrested at his home in Reykjanesbær, and upon investigation a number of objects in his possession connected to the matter were discovered.
The man’s car also fit the description of a vehicle seen near the crime scene.
In the wake of the bombing, the police went on high alert closing down Hverfisgata while bomb squads from the police and Coast Guard investigated the bomb’s remains.
