For the past couple of years, the quiet small town of Hveragerði in South Iceland has seen a number of their cats being poisoned to death. After months of no such incidents, a missing cat has now been found severed to pieces.
Usually, the cats have been poisoned by eating fish fillets that were dipped into antifreeze, which is poisonous to the felines. This time, at least two dead, severed cats were found by a twelve-year-old boy at an abandoned farm close by the town.
Bergljót Davíðsdóttir, a resident at Hveragerði, had been looking for her own missing cat since last weekend. Upon looking at the town’s Facebook discussion group, she saw reports of other missing cats and learned that the aforementioned boy had found those dead cats.
Upon arrival, they could only find one cat. The other had disappeared, and close by was a shovel and a giant fork used for digging in the ground that weren’t there before.
In an interview with RÚV, Bergljót said that a number of cats have been found in various places close to Hveragerði. She believes them to have been abandoned there. “It’s not like if people had been killed and the police were to investigate it seriously. There’s a lot of chaos involved when people lose their pets and don’t know what to do. People are afraid of their cat being next. Usually, the talks die down when nothing happens for a while. We can’t let that happen again because it’s an issue involving our society that destroys our town’s reputation, which isn’t right.”
Police officials in South Iceland have been criticized for not taking the matter seriously enough, as the killer has still not been found after all this time. The Icelandic Cat Friend Society has issued a statement on the matter. “Yet again the Cat Friend Society condemns the ill-treatment of cats and implores the individuals who have jurisdiction in these matters that they do care and will do everything possible to find the culprits,”.
