Hunger Games Star to Portray Iceland’s Last Executed Woman

By Iceland Review

According to the latest news from Hollywood, Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Lawrence will portray Agnes Magnúsdóttir, a farm worker in Northwest Iceland who in 1830 became the last woman to be executed in Iceland, as reported by today.

The film would be an adaptation of Australian author Hannah Kent’s novel Burial Rites. According to the Examiner, Gary Ross, the director of The Hunger Games is set to direct the film.

In March 1828, three people: Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir, Agnes Magnúsdóttir and Friðrik Sigurðsson murdered a man by the name of Natan Ketilsson.

For this crime, Agnes and Friðrik were beheaded on January 13, 1830, supposedly making it the last execution in Iceland’s history.
