Hungarians Open Chinese Tea House in Reykjavík

Today marks the opening of a new pop-up shop in Reykjavík, scheduled to operate until July 1.

The tea house is operated by Andras Halmos and his girlfriend Olga Nyári, both from Hungary.

Andras has worked with tea for 15 years and works only with the highest quality fresh and aged teas from China, India, Taiwan and Japan. He believes his will be the first shop in Iceland to have ever offered such teas.

The venture is called Menghai—partly because that is the name of a famous tea producing county and tea factory in Yunnan province in China, but also, nicely coincidentally, because it is housed inside the Mengi concert venue on Óðinsgata.

Andras sees the pop-up shop idea as a good testing ground; to see how Icelanders react to unfiltered and hand-produced teas, and how well the venue copes with hosting a new business.

It could be the beginning of something more permanent.
