According to the results of an informal study conducted by ruv.is, hundreds of apartment owners are renting rooms or their entire apartments or houses to short-term visitors in order to supplement their income.
The practice is a relatively new development in Iceland and the market for apartment rental by tourists has grown rapidly, although not as a result of a shortage of hotel rooms. Some visitors, such as families, prefer to rent apartments rather than stay at hotels or guesthouses.
Ruv.is found hundreds of rooms and homes in Reykjavík for rent on the internet.
