Almost 400 people received assistance through a special Christmas distribution yesterday, a project organized by the charity Maedrastyrksnefnd, Icelandic Church Aid and the Reykjavík Division of the Icelandic Red Cross.
Ragnhildur G. Gudmundsdóttir, chairman of the board of Maedrastyrksnefnd, told Morgunbladid that the Christmas packages include food, vouchers, toys, children’s books and various small goods.
According to Gudmundsdóttir, hundreds of people have received packages from the Christmas distribution initiative every day this week.
Packages will only be distributed on two other occasions, tomorrow and on Monday between 10 am and 4 pm on Borgartún 25. Gudmundsdóttir said there is plenty of food and that no one will leave empty-handed.
For the past few years the aforementioned charities have cooperated on Christmas distribution. Before Christmas last year, they received 1,597 applications for relief packages and 1,647 before Christmas in 2006.
