Hundreds Protest Outside Iceland’s Parliament

A few hundred people participated in the third demonstration organized by the Interest Group of Households (HH) and the association New Iceland on Austurvöllur square in front of the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, on Saturday.

Protestors demanded better credit terms for homeowners and brought attention to HH’s second payment strike, which is about to end without the government and loan institutions presenting an integral solution to correct the principal of mortgages, Morgunbladid reports.

“Tens of thousands of households are barely making ends meet,” said Fridrik Ó. Fridriksson, chairman of HH. He believes their actions have begun to deliver results.

HH is also urging people to stop using credit cards where credit points have been increased and warns people against debt adjustment schemes offered to them by banks, reasoning that they’re not as beneficial as claimed.
