Between 300 and 500 people attended a vigil outside the French Embassy in Reykjavík last night in memory of the victims of the attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on Wednesday and to rally in support of free speech.
People left flowers and candles below the French flag, which flew at half mast yesterday. A book of condolences was opened in front of the embassy.
Mayor of Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson and head of the Journalists Association of Iceland Hjálmar Jónsson joined French Ambassador Philippe O’Quin when he gave a speech in both English and French.
Several members of the Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, were also among the attendees.
