The stable area, which facilitates more than 700 horses, is run by the riders’ association Hördur. A passer-by noticed smoke coming from there late last night and notified the emergency services. All available firefighters were called to the scene, Morgunbladid reports.

The fire originated in a complex of five stables; the southern end was aflame. The fire had penetrated the roof and firefighters were trying to prevent it from spreading to other buildings.

It was difficult dealing with the fire because of stormy conditions but firefighters managed to extinguish it around midnight. However, the site was monitored throughout the night, visir.is reports.

The source of the fire is unknown.
