Horse dies while escaping from fireworks

Seventeen horses on the farm Arnarstapi in Mýrar, southwest Iceland, were frightened by the explosions on New Year’s Eve and tried to escape. One fell into a ditch and died.

Ásgerdur Pálsdóttir, farmer at Arnarstapi, checked on her horses shortly after midnight, but by then they had already run off. “The noise was like in a battlefield,” she told Fréttabladid.

The horses jumped over a ditch in their escape, but Sokki, a young stallion, did not make it across and died in the ditch.

Pálsdóttir said her horses had never been frightened so much before. But this year the weather was unusually calm, so the explosions were louder and there were more fireworks, she said.
