Hopes broken for further capelin fishing

Five capelin vessels were trying to find schools of capelin off the coast of Snaefellsnes yesterday but with no result.

Two days ago a fishing vessel netted 400 tons of good capelin nearby which evoked hopes for a new run of capelin from the west, Fréttabladid reported. This has not happened yet and there is no sign of the run.

The capelin is a very unpredictable fish but this season it has not arrived in huge numbers like before, resulting in total catch just over 100,000 tons. A quota of 150,000 tons had been set for capelin fishing.

“We are not getting anything and there is not a sign of any capelin in these waters,” said captain on a capelin fishing vessel who had set the course to find a new run of capelin.

The Iceland Marine Research Institute has declared that they will go on an research expedition if new schools of capelin appear from the west.
