The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said Iceland would be praised if the government continued with plans to protect the Jökulsár á Fjöllum River, and create a national park surrounding the Vatnajökull glacier, located in East Iceland.
Samantha Smith, who runs the Northern Hemisphere operations at WWF, said that while Iceland has received serious criticism by the organisation in years past, especially because of the Kárahnjúkar dam, the country would receive high marks in the area of environmental protection.
